The event will be co-organized by the Institute of Oriental Philology of the Jagiellonian University and the Foundation "Institute for Strategic Studies". The proposed overarching theme for the conference is the interconnection of local, regional and global trends throughout time and space.

2004 International Essay Contest for Young People

The United Nations has designated 2001-2010 as the "International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World." Not only should every child benefit from this global movement, but they should be encouraged to play a leading role in the creation of a culture of peace. The theme of this year's International Essay Contest is "Making the most of my qualities." Young people from around the world are invited to submit their creative ideas on this theme.

Call for Papers: Symposium - Mackinder's Heartland: A Help or Hindrance?, Tashkent, 2-3 December, 2004

2004 marks the centenary of the British geographer Halford Mackinder's famous 'Geographical Pivot of History' lecture at the Royal Geographical Society. In it he said that Eurasia, including Central Asia, was historically "the pivot region of the world's politics". Following its publication in the Geographical Journal, the address became one of the founding texts of the geopolitical tradition. It has attracted much attention from both admirers, who consider Mackinder a prophet of subsequent geopolitical events and a champion of democracy, and critics who lambaste him for geo-determinism and imperialism.

CAYN Research Seminar
