| The United Nations has designated 2001-2010 as the "International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World." Not only should every child benefit from this global movement, but they should be encouraged to play a leading role in the creation of a culture of peace. The theme of this year's International Essay Contest is "Making the most of my qualities." Young people from around the world are invited to submit their creative ideas on this theme. |

| 2004 marks the centenary of the British geographer Halford Mackinder's famous 'Geographical Pivot of History' lecture at the Royal Geographical Society. In it he said that Eurasia, including Central Asia, was historically "the pivot region of the world's politics". Following its publication in the Geographical Journal, the address became one of the founding texts of the geopolitical tradition. It has attracted much attention from both admirers, who consider Mackinder a prophet of subsequent geopolitical events and a champion of democracy, and critics who lambaste him for geo-determinism and imperialism. |

| The three-day Research Seminar, one of the first events held under OSCE Central Asian Youth Network, gathered over 50 senior students from the region, 8 of their supervisors, and 3 guest speakers from OSCE Secretariat in Vienna and the Warsaw-based OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights in the beautiful surroundings of lake Charvak, in Charvak Resort, Tashkent region. |
